About the Project

The Township is enhancing Norway Point Park with more water access and seating, while balancing these changes with careful shoreline preservation.

In 2023, the Township of Lake of Bays worked with the community to create the Parks, Open Space and Recreation Strategy. During our public consultation, we heard that people want more waterfront areas and better swimming access to recreational spaces like Norway Point Park.

Key Objectives

What’s Happening at the Shoreline?

Years ago, Norway Point underwent a shoreline restoration project led by community groups to support the natural environment. Native plants and trees, including tag alder trees, were introduced to enhance shoreline stability and health.

🔴 The Problem

  • Overgrowth

Over time, the plants, especially tag alder, along the shoreline grew tall, blocking the lake view and making it hard to get to the beach and swimming area.

Since maintenance was community-managed as part of the project, township staff were unable to provide regular upkeep, resulting in challenges with controlling the height of the plants.

🟢 The Solution

  • New Planting Plan

Township staff are implementing a new planting plan for the area. The updated design includes native plants that support the preservation of the shoreline while improving access and making the park more enjoyable for families. The Township is taking over regular maintenance of these plants to ensure they thrive and keep the space welcoming for everyone.
