The purchase responds to public input gathered through past engagement, which shaped several Council‑approved strategies. It preserves an important community space in Dwight and ensures future development reflects community priorities rather than private interests. The strategies that guided this decision were:

• Parks, Open Space and Recreation Strategy (POSRS): Calls for land uses to enhance recreation, foster active living, inclusion, access, and a supportive physical and social environment.
  
  
• Economic Development Strategy: Calls to “develop Lake of Bays as a destination for residents and visitors.”
  
  
• Community Improvement Plan (CIP): Calls for strategic community investment and identifying opportunities to improve the public realm.

With community input, the future design and features of the park will be shaped through a full engagement and planning process.

The Township purchased the Logging Chain Lodge property for 3.1 million dollars.

Revenue from the sale of several surplus municipal properties is helping to strengthen the Township’s long‑term financial position, including supporting the purchase of the Logging Chain Lodge property. These surplus parcels are not practical to maintain as public spaces, and rather than retaining land that does not serve community needs, Council is focusing its resources on properties that are functional, valuable, and beneficial for residents.

The Township requires the discussion of land purchases in a closed Council session, so the price and negotiations stay fair for taxpayers. Council is elected to make decisions in the public interest, including time‑sensitive land matters. Past community feedback has already shown strong support for protecting public spaces and improving access, which helped guide this decision.

Staff reviewed the buildings and found them not suitable for the Township to reuse or maintain. The buildings are older structures, and updating them to meet Township or public needs would be impractical and costly. While they are well-suited for resort use, they do not align with the future parkland uses identified in past community planning and engagement. The buildings were sold through a government surplus auction, which also helped the Township avoid high removal costs.

A design consultant will be hired in late 2026, with design plans presented to Council in 2027.

The Township is committed to honouring some of the site’s heritage, including retaining the original name as part of the future development plans for Logging Chain Park.
